Fortifications
1981-82

In 1981 Detroit was a city struggling to provide a normal urban experience in the face of severe poverty and widespread property crime. In many sections of the city storefront windows had entirely disappeared, replaced by glass and concrete block, plywood and bricks. Sometimes an effort was made to estheticize the fortified facade; many times they remained unadorned.

While I do show prints of selected images from my Fortifications series, its primary form is a 160-image programmed slideshow with an audio track.
